Sample Itinerary
PARO – THIMPHU
Your journey begins with a warm welcome at the Paro International Airport and a private transfer to your luxurious hotel. After settling in, delve into Bhutanese history with a visit to the National Museum of Bhutan (Ta Dzong) and end your day of travels by strolling through the charming streets of Paro.
Start Day 2 with an unforgettable hike to the Taktsang Monastery, Bhutan’s most iconic landmark, where a gourmet picnic lunch awaits against the backdrop of panoramic views. Returning to Paro, take a tour of Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest and most sacred temples, and explore the local markets in the evening.
On Day 3, enjoy a scenic drive to the capital, Thimphu, where you will tour the Tashichho Dzong, a majestic fortress housing the throne room and government offices. Explore the streets of Thimphu, visit the national handicraft emporium, and acquire exquisite mementos to cherish the first of your Bhutanese memories.
THIMPHU – PUNAKHA
Embark on a full day of sightseeing and immersion in the city of Thimphu on Day 4. Begin with a visit to the National Memorial Chorten, a serene monument dedicated to global peace and prosperity. Explore the National Textile Museum and the Folk Heritage Museum to learn about Bhutanese textile history and rich traditional life. Next, ascend to the towering Buddha Dordenma, an awe-inspiring golden statue overlooking the Thimphu Valley. Venture into the Motithang Takin Preserve, where you can witness Bhutan’s national animal, the Takin, in its natural habitat. Conclude the day with a leisurely stroll through Thimphu’s bustling streets.
On Day 5, journey from Thimphu to Punakha via the breathtaking Dochula Pass, where you can soak in sweeping Himalayan views. Upon arrival, explore Punakha Dzong, one of the most beautiful dzongs in Bhutan, situated at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. Continue to the mystical Chimi Lhakhang, also known as the temple of the Divine Madman, and unlock the secrets of Bhutan’s spiritual heritage with colorful murals and captivating folklore tales.
PUNAKHA – GANGTEY – TRONGSA
Continue onward on Day 6 from Punakha to Gangtey Valley, an area renowned for its mesmerizing landscapes and the legendary Gangtey Monastery, an ancient Buddhist sanctuary dating back to the 17th century. Explore the natural beauty of the surrounding Phobjikha Valley and its protected wetlands, home to the majestic black-necked cranes.
As you journey from Gangtey to Trongsa on Day 7, traverse the rugged terrain of the Pele La Pass. When you arrive in Trongsa, immerse yourself in the regal grandeur of the Trongsa Dzong, a massive fortress-monastery revered as the largest dzong in the kingdom and an architectural masterpiece that dates back to an era of kings and warriors. Step into the Ta Dzong Musem nestled within the ancient walls of Trongsa Dzong, and discover arrays of carefully arranged artifacts and exhibits that illuminate Bhutan’s storied past.
TRONGSA – BUMTHANG – WANGDUE PHODRANG
Get ready to explore Bumthang, the spiritual heartland of Bhutan, on Day 8. The first stop is Jakar Dzong, perched on a hill overlooking the valley. Next, explore the revered sanctuaries of Jambay Lhakhand and Kurjey Lhakhang, two of the most sacred temples in Bumthang.
Continue touring through Bumthang on Day 9, beginning with a visit to Tamshing Lhakhang, a Buddhist temple renowned for its ancient murals and profound religious significance. Then, explore the Swiss Farm area and local breweries to taste the flavors of Bhutanese beer and experience the local culinary delights. Finish the day with visits to nearby villages, where you will have the opportunity to meet the local residents, be immersed in their traditional way of life, and build meaningful connections that will enrich your Bhutanese journey in a uniquely personal way.
On Day 10, bid farewell to Bumthang as you make your way to Wangdue Phodrang, relishing the scenic views of the Himalayas along the way. Wander through the historic Wangdue Phodrang Dzong, which stands on a ridge overlooking the Punatsangchhu River. Enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of nearby villages and markets and absorb the local culture and craftsmanship.
PARO
The second-to-last stretch of your Bhutanese journey begins with a drive back to Paro that showcases the picturesque landscapes that surround you. Visit Drukgyel Dzong, a historic fortress that now stands in ruins, framed by stunning views of Mount Jomolhari. In the evening, unwind and relax with a leisurely time in town.
On Day 12, embark on a day trip to the enchanting Haa Valley and take in its serenity and tranquil beauty. Begin the day with a scenic drive through winding mountain roads, arriving at Lhakhang Karpo (White Temple) and Lhakhang Nagpo (Black Temple), two sacred sites hidden amidst in the hillsides. While surrounded by breathtaking views, savor a picnic lunch and soak in the grandeur of Bhutan’s nature.
On Day 13, journey from Paro to Chele La Pass, Bhutan’s highest motorable pass. Revel in the gorgeous views of the Himalayas and take a short hike amidst the stunning surroundings before returning to Paro for an evening of relaxation.
Day 14, your last full day in Bhutan, is packed with exciting new cultural experiences, from participating in a hands-on traditional Bhutanese cooking class, to visiting a local farmhouse for an authentic glimpse into rural life, to ending the day with a mesmerizing farewell cultural performance that showcases the vibrant music, dance, and elaborate costumes of Bhutan. Return in the evening to prepare your things for departure the next day and enjoy your last night in the Land of the Thunder Dragon.
On your final day, Day 15, bid farewell to the enchanting kingdom of Bhutan as you make your way to Paro International Airport once again.
